<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multilayer optical film with which, even when an image is viewed from a direction that is obliquely lengthwise or widthwise to the normal of the image plane of an image display device, a change in the tone of the display image is hindered and the image in which a tone inversion area is minimal can be displayed. <P>SOLUTION: The multilayer optical film comprises at least: an homeotropically aligned liquid crystal layer (1); and an optical film (2) which satisfies nx<SB>2</SB>>ny<SB>2</SB>≈nz<SB>2</SB>, wherein nx<SB>2</SB>is a refractive index in the X axis in which a refractive index within the plane of a film is maximized, ny<SB>2</SB>is a refractive index in the Y axis perpendicular to the X axis, and nz<SB>2</SB>is a refractive index in the direction Z of the thickness of the film. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
