PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an optical switch wherein an adverse influence by heat generation can be suppressed. SOLUTION: The optical switch, for switching transmission paths of an optical signal with refractive index variation caused by carrier injection, includes a semiconductor substrate, an optical waveguide layer wherein an optical waveguide wherein an optical signal is made incident from one side and branched into two on the way thereof to be emitted is formed on the semiconductor substrate, a first electrode formed at the branched part of the optical waveguide on the optical waveguide layer, a second electrode formed in the vicinity of the branched part of the optical waveguide on the optical waveguide layer and a third electrode formed on the side opposed to the first electrode holding the second electrode together with the first electrode. When the optical switch is turned on, carriers are injected from the first and the second electrodes and when the optical switch is turned OFF, the carriers are injected from the second and the third electrodes.
