PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an AC type plasma display device which realizes lower power consumption, by reducing unnecessary radiation of an electromagnetic waves due to scanning operation of a scan driver, and to provide its driving method. SOLUTION: The AC type display device of M×L matrix structure has a plurality of sustaining blocks 1H-1 to 1H-3, including as one unit connection groups where a plurality of sustaining electrodes are connected in common, and a plurality of scan drivers 1F-1 to 1F-6 having multistage output for applying a discharge voltage to the plurality of scanning electrodes. The sustaining blocks 1H-1 to 1H-3 have control circuits 1D, which operate independently and stop the scanning operation pulses outputted from the scan drivers 1F-1 to 1F-6 to each of the sustaining blocks 1H-1 to 1H-3.
