A marking system for items, e.g. eggs, has the size of each item (2) measured by a sensor (5) and with the position of the marking head (10) adjusted for each item by a process controller (9). The position of the marking head is set by a stepping motor (12). The sensor can be mechanical or optic. A simple optic sensor has an array of photocells (7) for rapid determination of size and shape.
