The vehicle bonnet (8) is located a short distance above an electrical switch (10) located over a gap that is smaller than the switch shoulder (13). If the bonnet should collapse on impact with a pedestrian and make contact with the switch top (12), the switch triggers a release unit to drop the bonnet by a defined distance towards the base (22) which breaks to absorb energy.
