PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element manufacturable at a low cost and capable of obtaining luminescence having high luminance with a low applied voltage, and a simple manufacturing method of a positive electrode surface reforming layer for it. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element has a layer comprising a copolymer composed of a monomer unit having an aryl group, an aromatic heterocyclic group, an alkoxy group, or an alkyl oxy-carbonyl group impeding no hole transportation from a positive electrode and requiring no special manufacturing method, and a monomer unit having at least one functional group. In this manufacturing method for a positive electrode surface reforming layer, the layer comprising the copolymer and a layer comprising a compound having two or more functional groups capable of covalently bonding to the functional group of the copolymer are laminated so that one or more layers of each are alternately laminated through covalent bond newly formed by reaction.
