PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape unit and its control method that enable a read to be carried on even when old data are left on a magnetic tape without being erased. SOLUTION: If a readout error occurs to a read block from the magnetic tape, data blocks right before and right after the error occurrence block are read out to obtain block IDs and it is decided whether the two obtained block IDs are successive; when the block IDs are successive, the error occurrence block is ignored and the data readout is carried on.
