PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a document reader which accurately detects the size of a document. SOLUTION: The document reader includes: a reader main body having at its top face a contact glass on which a document is placed; an opening/closing part disposed on the top face of the reader main body and is freely opened or closed so as to cover the contact glass; an opened/closed angle detection means for detecting the degree to which the opening/closing part is opened or closed; a document size detection sensor which is disposed within the reader main body and detects the size of the document depending on the degree to which the opening/closing part is opened or closed; and a reading means for reading the document after the detection of the size of the document by the document size detection sensor. When a thick document is placed on the contact glass and the opening/closing part is closed, the opening/closing part presses the thick document over the entire surface. The opened/closed angle detection means detects the closed state of the opening/closing part, and then the document size detection sensor is actuated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
