PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for coloring quickly, neatly at lower cost a Tatami mat in use. SOLUTION: Dirt and a secretion from human bodies stuck to the surface of rushes used as the floor mat can be removed first by gently polishing hard portions of the surfaces of rushes. Also, the permeation of the color pigment can be quickened by slightly scratching the surface of rushes by polishing. After this process, the coloring can be made without making difference in color between the scratched portion and non-scratched portion after the scratching process. For this purpose, optimum super-fine mists of the pigment are required, optimum blowing pressure is required, and the blowing is needed from the optimum distance from the surface of the Tatami mat. In addition, the color pigments can be strongly bonded to the fibers of the rushes by giving heat treatment with an electric iron after the spraying, and the Tatami mat can be immediately used since the surface of the Tatami can be quickly dried by the heat treatment.
