A process for producing L-threonine comprises culturing a microorganism selected from the group comprising an isoleucine-, threonine- or homoserine-requiring strain of Arthrobacter paraffineus or Coryne bacterium hydrocarboclastus in an aqueous medium containing at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon containing 10 to 20 carbon atoms as the major source of carbon under aerobic conditions at a temperature of from 25 DEG to 40 DEG C. and recovering the accumulated L-threonine from the resultant fermentation liquor. The hydrocarbons are used singly or in mixtures of two or more. Synthetic or natural culture media may be used, and the pH of said media is preferably kept neutral.
