An apparatus and method of using and providing a door assembly for the drum door (3) and lid (12) of a top loading horizontal axis laundry machine is disclosed. The drum door (3) is provided with an automatic latch system that can be automatically latched and unlatched on command. The automatic drum latch employs a floating latch bar (7) which engages or disengages a latch strike (8) attached to the drum door (3), depending on its orientation at the time the drum door (3) is depressed and released. An actuator (11) depresses and releases the drum door (3) at the proper times. When the lid (12) of the machine is closed, the drum (2) is rotated to a selected rotational position that determines whether the automatic drum latch will latch or unlatch after an actuator (11) is extended to depress the drum door (3) and then is released. This system allows both the outer laundry machine lid (12) and the inner drum door (3) of a top loading, horizontal axis machine to be either opened or closed with a single action on the part of the user. |
