PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of preventing originals from falling due to their own weight by discharging originals whose length is less than an original support subscanning length without supporting the originals by the machine and by enabling the machine to support originals after the end of read operations when the image forming apparatus handles originals whose length is an original support subscanning length or over. SOLUTION: After carrying of originals is started and the original subscanning length is confirmed, a scanner control section 24 compares an original support subscanning length (B) stored in a ROM 11 with the original subscanning length (A) obtained by this scanning, when the original subscanning length (A) is longer than the original support subscanning length (B), the scanner control section 24 stops the original so that the tail end of the original is located at a position in a downstream of carried original from an original resist sensor 102 and in an upperstream to an original discharge roller 103. When the original subscanning length (A) is shorter than the original support subscanning length (B), the scanner control section 24 provides an instruction so that the tail end of the original is stopped at a position at which the tail end of the original gets out of the original discharge roller 103.
