In an hydraulic copying lathe having a tool cross slide 6, Fig. 1, movable on a saddle 1, which in turn is movable on a bed 2, the distance L between the face of the follower 11 which engages the template 12, and the point of the tool 13, remains constant during expansion of the slide due to heating of the oil which operates the hydraulic piston 19 for moving the slide. Piston 19 is controlled by a valve 21. connected to a plate 24, secured to a lever 28 which carries the follower 11. The lever is pivoted to a spindle 32 carried by bearings 34, 35, Fig. 5, in the cranks of a crank-shaft 38 rigidly connected to a shaft 39 mounted in cross slide 6. A hub 43 secured to shaft 39 carries a crank 45 which can be slidable therein so as to adjust its effective length, and is connected to a compensating rod 47 pivotally connected to slide 6 at 49, Fig. 6. Rod 47 is made of material whose coefficient of expansion differs from that of slide 6. In operation, when the oil is cold, the slide is in the position of Fig. 6. After a period of operation the oil of piston 19 heats up, so that the length of slide 6 increases by an amount d, Fig. 7. The axis of shaft 39 has moved a distance d, whereas the axis 46 of the end of crank 45 has not moved, and the cranks 45, 36, 36 have moved through an angle b. The expansion is thus taken up without altering the distance L. |
