PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin and small article theft detector that is compact enough when attached to a thin or small article to display the article unhindered and to make consumers feel the detector less disagreeable and obtrusive when checking the article and to provide an article theft monitoring device. SOLUTION: The article theft detector 2 includes a switch case 21, a photoswitch 22, a light-reflecting film member 23, and a case-sticking film member 24. The light-reflecting film member 23 is stuck to an article w1 or the like and the switch case 21 is stuck to the article with the case-sticking film member 24 surrounding the film member 23. The light-reflecting film member 23 causes light L1 from the light-emitting diode 221 of the photoswitch 22 to impinge on a phototransistor 222 as reflected light L2 via a switch case light hole 210 to make the phototransistor conducting.
