PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a switch of at least one type of the following characteristics: magnetic field strength characteristics, slew rate characteristics, linear characteristics, and magnetic field time-rate-of-change characteristics. SOLUTION: In a gradient magnetic field coil device having a plurality of gradient magnetic field coils for creating a gradient magnetic field, each gradient magnetic field coil has a first gradient magnetic field coil section 57-1 and a second gradient magnetic field coil section 57-2 that at least one type of its characteristics--magnetic field strength characteristics, slew rate characteristics, linear characteristics, and magnetic field time-rate-of-change characteristics--is different from those of the first gradient magnetic field coil section.
