A cutting tool comprises a supporting body having at least one pair of bores one of which bores carries a seating member for a throwaway tip while the other carries means, (which may itself be a further seating member) adapted to bear upon an abutment surface of the said seating member to lock and orientate it. In a first embodiment, Fig. 2, a milling cutter has a series of seating members 19 each having a spigot 18 located in a bore 15 and a locking peg 16 located in an adjacent bore 14 engages an abutment surface 17 on the seating member 19. Several of the seating members carry roughing tips 25 while one seating member carries a finishing tip 27. The tips are secured by countersunk head screws 28 which engage a countersunk recess in split bushes 29. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, seating members 19 are arranged in pairs, the first member of which carries a roughing tip 25 and the second a finishing tip 27, and the first member is locked by engagement of the second with a crescent shaped abutment surface 31 on the first while a locking plate 32 screwed to the body of the cutter engages a similar surface 31 on the second member 19. In further embodiments (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) a complete series of equispaced bores carries a circular series of seating members or dummy members, each having a crescent shaped abutment surface serving for location by the succeeding member. The seating member 19, Fig. 11, may be formed in two parts 36, 37 the part 36 having a limited range of adjustment on a spigot 38 of the part 37 by means of a pair of locking screws 39, this providing adjustment of the orientation of the cutting tip 27X. |
