A photographing apparatus is provided to regularly maintain a frame rate in executing electronic zoom without using a frame memory of large capacity, thereby realizing a photographing apparatus appropriate for mobile purposes. A photographing control unit(4) designates a scanning area of a frame of which horizontal scanning and vertical scanning periods are changed based on magnification of an electronic zoom. An image sensor(1) executes reset scanning to each line of the frame for converting an inputted optical signal into an electric signal to accumulate the electric signal on a pixel array. The image sensor executes read scanning for reading the accumulated electric signal for outputting the electric signal as image data. If a command for changing horizontal scanning and vertical scanning periods is received from a frame N, the image sensor executes reset scanning and read scanning for the frame N based on the changed horizontal scanning and vertical scanning periods even in case that the reset scanning period is partially overlapped with a read scanning period of a previous frame N-1. A register(5) retains a part of the image data of the frame output from the image sensor. An RW(Read Write) control unit(6) subscribes image data of at least one line of the frame at the register based on the magnification of the electronic zoom and reads the retained image data of at least one line at a predetermined frame rate. A resolution converter(7) interpolates the read image data for converting the image data into the size of image data of one frame.
