The invention relates to an optical soot particle sensor, a production method and methods for operating said soot particle sensor. The soot particle sensor (38) is characterized by a light source (22), a light guiding element (10) having a defining surface (14) and a light detector (34). The defining surface (14) reflects incident light (12) emanating from the light source (22) from the inside of the element (10) with a reflection factor which is dependent upon the amount of soot covering the outside of the defining surface (14). The light detector is illuminated with reflected light (20).
