<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting system with a high utilization factor of light beams, which is suitably used for a direct view liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: The lighting system is equipped with a light source 12, a light guide plate 14, a polarization separating element 20 which separates light emitted from a light-emitting surface of the light guide plate into first and second linearly polarized light beams (P1, P2) with respective polarization directions mutually intersecting and emits principal light beams of the first and second linearly polarized light beams in directions different from each other by a separation angle θ, condensing elements 32 which condense the first and second linearly polarized light beams respectively and form first and second condensing spots and a polarization converting element 33 disposed in the vicinity of at least one out of the first and second condensing spots and changes the polarization direction of at least a part of the linearly polarized light beams. An extension direction of an incident end face of the light guide plate and a plane defined by the principal light beams of the first and second linearly polarized light beams separated with the polarization separating element nearly perpendicularly intersect.
