PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor optical amplifier having a photodetector for detecting signal strength at the input and output ends of the optical amplifier without using any separate light distributors. SOLUTION: The semiconductor optical amplifier comprises a first-conductivity-type semiconductor substrate 201; a semiconductor optical amplifier having a horizontal lasing structure formed on the semiconductor substrate; and first and second photodetectors 220-1, 220-2 formed on the semiconductor substrate horizontally separated from the input and output sides of the semiconductor optical amplifier for measuring the strength of the input and output signals of the semiconductor optical amplifier.
