PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clarify a method for accurately controlling the particle size of ferromagnetic particles which constitute a magnetic layer, and its variation, in a magnetic recording medium adapted to an AMR head or a GMR head. SOLUTION: A magnetic layer 2 including a plurality of columns which are aggregates made of ferromagnetic particles is formed by oblique vapor deposition, continuously changing the incident angle of metallic vapor from a high incident angle to a low incident angle with respective to a traveling non-magnetic support 1. In that case, oxygen gas is introduced, and non-magnetic particles are formed so as to separate columns from one another. Oxygen gas is introduced from both a low incident angle side and a high incident angle side. This allows an oxide film 4 to be formed at an interface of the non-magnetic support 1 and the magnetic layer 2, and the particle size of the ferromagnetic particles to be controlled.
