PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a file position search method and a device that can shorten the time needed to access the position where a file is present. SOLUTION: A search start cluster (CF) of the file is set to a logical cluster (CFh) which has been used for a last position search and stored, namely, let CF=CFh. Then a frequency (NCh) of reference to RFAT is found from NCh=ip(BPh/BC)-ip(BPd/BC) and a link of RFAT is traced by the frequency (NCh) of reference to the RFAT found from the set search start cluster (CFh) of the file to access a found cluster, and a frequency of reference to a file allocation table is decreased to speedily determine position information of the file.
