PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable optical attenuator that dispenses with a high voltage as well as facilitating control of attenuation and that enables attenuation of signal light to be obtained in a plurality of optical paths each with high accuracy. SOLUTION: This variable optical attenuator is structured so that a plurality of shutters each advanceable into a plurality of optical paths for transmitting signal light are respectively transferred by a plurality of actuators. A driving section 42 electrically drives the plurality of actuators, which are respectively provided with current routes D1-D6 producing a Lorentz's force through energization by the driving section 42. The driving section 42 is provided with a plurality of variable constant current sources A1-A6 respectively corresponding to the current routes D1-D6. The variable constant current sources A1-A6 pass, into the corresponding current routes, a constant current having a current value in accordance with corresponding control signals S1-S6.
