PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector which accurately performs positioning for focusing and which prevents unreasonable or unnecessary remeasurements by properly setting the range of remeasurement. SOLUTION: A control circuit 5 makes a comparison between the number of steps X to the Max_cont position measured in the first process and the number of steps A of preliminarily set detailed measurement. When the number of steps A of the detailed measurement is larger than that of the steps X, the control circuit changes it to the number of steps C which is smaller than that of the step number of the Max_cont position and performs detailed measurement with a limited range. Even if the image signal is affected by noise and a specified position deviates from the focusing position, detailed measurement is performed again by setting a measurement range using a prescribed range from the specified position, so that the positioning for the focusing can be carried out accurately.
