PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system or method for characterizing a visual impression of a surface. SOLUTION: In this method for specifying a surface characteristic, the first characteristic value and second characteristic value for characterizing unevenness of the surface are calculated, numerical processing is applied at least to the first characteristic value to calculate the first drawn-out value, and numerical processing is applied at least to the second characteristic value to calculate the second drawn-out value. A relation for description about the visual characteristic of the surface is constructed therein at least partially between the first drawn-out value and second drawn-out value.
