An automated machine tool has a workpiece (W) held in a chuck and is rotated while a cutter moves in a controlled motion. The structure is defined in three dimensions (D1,D2,D3). The precise control depends on the position relative to a machine reference point. For this the workpiece is located using a controlled motion probe (60).
