1,162,776. Vinyl polymerization. POLYMER CORP. Ltd. 28 June, 1968 [18 Aug., 1967], No. 30962/68. Heading C3P. Vinyl monomers are polymerized to produce a stereo-regular polymer having a molecular weight corresponding to an intrinsic viscosity of less than 10 decilitre/gram, measured at 30‹ C. in toluene, by contacting the monomer with a hydrocarbyl aluminium compound and a compound of a Group 4B to 6B metal in the presence of less than 2 moles per 100 moles of monomer, of a halogen substituted diolefin containing 4-12 carbon atoms. Preferably a conjugated diolefin such as isoprene or butadiene is polymerized to give a product having an intrinsic viscosity of 0.5 to 5 dl/gm., by contacting the monomer with a trialkyl aluminium and a vanadium compound in the presence of 0À1 to 1.0 mole of chloroprene. In the examples, isoprene is polymerized in benzene using a catalyst comprising aluminium triethyl and either vanadium trichloride or amixture of vanadium tetrachloride and titanium tetrachloride, in the presence of chloroprene, the polymer being precipitated with ethanol, and extracted with boiling ethanol containing 2,6-ditertiary butyl 4-methyl phenol.
