A process is described in which reagents are applied to a blot transfer film (for example a Western blot transfer film) using capillary action between a first and second surface, instead of immersion into a tank. In a first embodiment a reagent 3 is introduced at the interface of a film 1 and a carrier film 2. Said films may have similar wetting characteristics. The reagent may be applied under pressure, and is distributed over the film 2 by capillary action. Excess reagent may be removed via wicks 4. In a second embodiment the reagent may be introduced between the carrier film 2 and a gel slab 5. A wicking boundary 6 is provided to remove the excess reagent. In a third embodiment the carrier film is placed in contact with a surface that has irrigation channels (6 fig. 3 not shown) formed into it. Reagent is introduced into these channels before it flows across the surface. Further channels (7 fig. 3 not shown) may be used to remove the excess reagent. In a final embodiment the second surface may be composed of the original gel slab 4 into which channels are formed and utilised as the third embodiment although wicks (8 fig. 4 not shown) are used rather than the further drainage channels. |
