The automobile floor covering has a tufted pile layer of piles at a carrier (18) for the pile tufts, using a tufting machine as described in DE3409574-C2. At the under side, the longitudinal rows (24) of tufts (29) are back-stitched (25) in a zigzag. The carrier has a number of empty perforations (28) formed by tufting needles without a pile yarn, alternating with the pile tufts in lateral rows (27), to reduce the weight and improve the acoustic effect. The floor covering has a specific weight of up to 250 g/m2 with a pile density of a maximum of 175000 piles per m2.
