The machine has a tool carrier (1) with a drive roller (4) and a dancer roller system (5) to tension the grinding band (2) and backing or support band (11). The band passes over two fixed guide rollers on either side of the workpiece (3). The workpiece may be a shaft with a generally cylindrical outer surface and a regular array of recesses (13). Small guide rollers (7) are mounted on pivoted curved arms (16) which can be swung to partially enclose the workpiece and provide a wide arc of engagement (beta).
