An automotive exhaust manifold feeds hot gases and additives to a catalytic converter via a pipe. The pipe contains a vortex generator insert located immediately upstream of the catalytic converter. The vortex generator is a tubular insert cut from a single piece of sheet metal. During the sheet metal cutting process, tabs cut from the panel are folded inwards to form gas guide vanes.
