The bench has a drawing die (2) through which an elongated continuous metal workpiece extends. A drawing carriage (4) draws the work-piece through the die and is displaced along a linear path downstream of the die. A linear drive (8) displaces the carriage to and from the die along a path through a distance equal to a preset length of a drawn product to be produced. A cutter downstream of the path cuts the drawn product. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating a drawing apparatus.
