The winder (10), to wind a web of paper etc. into a roll (11), has a roller (13) pressed against the roll to squeeze out any air. The rotary speed and/or torque at the air displacement roller is controlled by the actual tension of the web (12) drawn on to the winding roll. A sensor (15) at a web guide roller (14) measures the web tension, with a link to the air displacement roller.
