Method and computer system for reducing the runtime of a material requirements planning run. A computer system is loading a plurality of bills of materials into a data structure (300). It analyses parent-child relationships (310) between components of the plurality of bills of materials in the data structure (300) and sets for each component in the data structure (300) a counter value (CV) that indicates the number of parent components for each component.
