摘要 1,221,683. Alkaline fuel cells. SOC. GENERAL DE CONSTRUCTIONS ELECTRIQUES ET MECANIQUES (Alsthom). 26 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 9232/68. Heading H1B. The basic electrolyte of a fuel cell is automatically decarbonated by dividing the cell into two compartments with a non-anionic semi-permeable membrane, allowing an anolyte and a catholyte to flow through the two compartments parallel to the diaphragm at such a speed that the anolyte on leaving the anode compartment reaches the pH at which C0 2 gas is released, allowing the gas to sepa rate from the electrolyte at the outlet to the anode compartment, allowing the two electrolyte streams to mix and then dividing the streams again and recycling them through the cell. The membrane may be non-ionic and the electrolyte may include an inert salt, the salt concentration being larger than the base concentration. C0 2 may be released at pH's above 9. The cell may be a multiple cell comprising a plurality of elements through which the electrolyte flows in series, the anolyte in each element being of substantially uniform pH. The elements may be connected in series, each making an equal contribution to the power of the cell. In the embodiment shown anolyte and catholyte are circulated by pumps 7 and 15 through eight cells which are electrically joined in series (only six cells are shown). Methanol is supplied at 8 and air under pressure is supplied to each cell at 18. CO 2 is liberated at 9.
