[Also in Division C1] Cobalt metal or compounds thereof may be removed from admixture with nickel metal by treatment with a hot aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide containing at least 10 per cent by wt hydroxide, followed by separation of the liquid phase containing the cobalt from the solid nickel phrase. Preferably a temperature above 150‹F, is used, with a hydroxide concentration of 30-50%. Hydroxides of sodium or potassium are preferred.
