An explosive composition comprises ammonium nitrate and chrome-lignin prepared by mixing a water-soluble hexavalent chromium compound with sulphite waste liquor. The chrome-lignin acts as a thickener and sensitizer. The ammonium nitrate may be mixed with the aqueous chrome-lignin solution before the latter gels. Suitable chromium compounds are sodium and potassium bichromate, potassium chromate, and chromium trioxide. An additional thickener may be added, e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, polyethylene oxide, a polyacrylate or polyacrylamide, carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, methylcellulose, guar gum, locust bean gum, or carboxymethylated starch. Borax may be present as a gelatin accelerator. Aluminium powder or TNT may be added as an additional sensitizer. Part of the ammonium nitrate may be replaced by sodium nitrate or sodium perchlorate. |
