Polyvinyl resins such as polyvinylchloride are plasticized with an ester of a C3-C6 monocarboxylic aliphatic acid and an hydroxy compound of the formula <FORM:1122759/C3/1> in which R, R1 and R11 are hydrogen or methyl and n is 1, 2 or 3. There may also be present another plasticizer, e.g. phthalates, adipates, azelates, sebacates, chlorinated paraffins, alkyl benzene or epoxidized soybean oil, a Ba/Cd stabilizer which may also contain zinc, organic phosphites, a filler such as dolomite and a pigment such as rutile.ALSO:Esters are obtained from a C3-C6 monocarboxylic aliphatic acid or derivative and a hydroxy compound of the formula <FORM:1122759/C2/1> in which R, R1 and R11 are hydrogen or methyl, and n is 1, 2 or 3. Those esters in which R is H and one of R1 and R11 is H and the other is CH3 are claimed per se. The hydroxyl compound may be the mixture obtained by reaction of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide with phenol or cresol. Specified acids are propionic, n-butyric, isobutyric, pentanoic, hexanoic, 2-ethylbutyric and crotonic. Reaction is effected in the presence of p-toluene sulphoni acid or sulphuric acid and an azeotropic water entrainer, e.g. toluene, cyclohexane, n-heptane or a gasoline fraction. The product is neutralized, washed, distilled and decolorized with activated charcoal. |
