In a cesium molecular beam frequency standard, employing the quantum transitions between two energy states, in which di-polar magnets are used as state selectors, by deflection of the beam, the frequency of the E.M. field applied to the beam is stabilized by a feedback circuit from the deflector. The second state detector, nearest the detector, is formed of a magnetic dipole, the field of which is shaped by the introduction of a central pole. The poles are profiled so as to form a field similar to that produced by two pairs of current carrying conductors. The resultant forces on the cesium molecules, in the hyperfine state, F3, are horizontal and are directed towards the vertical plane along the beam axis. The second detector may be an electrostatic system. |
