A method for manufacturing porous ceramic preform is provided, which offers excellent heat insulation and a large-sized ceramic preform without cracking and bending by impregnating polymeric sponge with inorganic binders and dry-hardening. The porous ceramic preform is manufactured by the following steps of: (i) impregnating a polymeric sponge, forming a network structure, with liquid inorganic binders such as sodium silicate, potassium silicate, silica sol, alumina sol and aluminum phosphate; (ii) dehydrating binder-impregnated sponge to keep the amount of binder properly; (iii) drying the polymer sponge at 100-180deg.C to harden inorganic binders. The inorganic binders are optionally mixed with hardening agent, surfactant, silane coupling agent(or organic binder), and sodium silicofluoride(or magnesium sulfate). Also, Al(OH)3, Mg(OH)2, Sb compound, phosphate, phosphorous/halogen flame retarding agents, and thermal hardening agent are optionally added to the inorganic binders. The resultant ceramic preform is manufactured by repeating the steps like impregnating, dehydrating and drying.
