APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A FUSED TAPERED OPTICAL FIBER COUPLER

An apparatus and a method for manufacturing a fused optical fiber coupler are provided to reduce manufacturing cost by mass production by automatically twisting an optical fiber and using a flame brushing technique for fusing the optical fiber. A pair of jigs(10) hold two optical fibers. A torch portion(20) fuses the optical fiber to be tapered. An extension portion(30) uniformly extends the optical fibers at both ends. A planar semi-circular chuck is implemented in front of a circular stage which is rotated by a step motor. Two optical fiber fixing holes are provided at a center of the chuck to twist the optical fibers. A clamp member is moved left and right on a ball screw which is connected to the motor. A mini torch with two flame holes is horizontally mounted on the base by the clamp member. The mini torch is moved left and right by a flame brushing technique to fuse uniformly the optical fibers.
