A hologram 33<SP>1</SP>, Fig.1, is copied by illuminating it with a coherent beam 23<SP>1</SP> from laser 21 so that the photographic film 33<SP>11</SP> receives the first order diffracted beam therefrom and illuminating the film 33<SP>11</SP> with a second beam 31 of radiation which is coherent with the first beam. As shown the second beam 31 is derived from the laser 21 by means of reflectors 26, 28. A pair of lenses 38, 40, of equal focal length are positioned in the first order diffracted beam and each are spaced a distance equal to this focal length from a pinhole 41, which reduces the effect of aberration in lens 38. In a modification the lenses 38, 40, and pinhole 41 are omitted and the second beam 31 impinges directly on film 33<SP>11</SP> without reflection.
