PURPOSE: A sensorless control method of a permanent magnet synchronous motor using instantaneous reactive power is provided to prevent mechanism errors in mechanical equations of the motor by calculating the instantaneous reactive power at a fixed coordinate system and then obtaining estimated speed using the calculated result. CONSTITUTION: Initial values, such as stator resistance, stator inductance, reverse electromotive force coefficient, line current, and line voltage, are received. Estimated current is calculated(201) based on a voltage equation and the initial values. Estimated rotor speed with a compensation value is calculated(203) based on the voltage equation and the initial values. Effective reactive power is calculated(205) by an external product of the line current and the estimated reverse electromotive force coefficient. Estimated reactive power is calculated(207) by an external product of the estimated line current and the estimated reverse electromotive force coefficient. The compensation value is determined(209) based on an error between the effective and estimated reactive powers. Overall procedures are repeated until the error approaches zero. The estimated speed for the minimized error is determined as a real speed.
