LCD HAVING A CHOLESTERIC LIQUID CRYSTAL FILM BETWEEN A BACKLIGHT UNIT AND A LOWER SUBSTRATE SUBSTITUTING FOR A LOWER POLARIZING PLATE

PURPOSE: An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to transmit the light of a backlight unit totally, thereby enhancing transmittance of backlight, by inserting a cholesteric liquid crystal film between the backlight unit and a lower substrate, substituting for a lower polarizing plate. CONSTITUTION: The first substrate(1) is opposed to the second substrate(2). A liquid crystal layer is disposed between the substrates. A cholesteric liquid crystal film(60) is disposed under the first substrate. A polarizing plate(22) is disposed over the second substrate. A backlight unit(340) is installed under the cholesteric liquid crystal film. The liquid crystal layer consists of liquid crystal materials having characteristics of negative dielectric anisotropy. The liquid crystal materials are aligned vertically with respect to the first substrate and the second substrate.
