An IP sharer for preventing malfunction of a backbone network by controlling a DHCP(Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server and an operation method of the IP sharer are provided to prevent a communication failure of a communication network possibly caused due to erroneous connection of the IP SHARER. WAN(Wide Area Network) I/F(Interface) unit(202) is connected with an ISP(Internet Service Provider) system. A LAN(Local Area Network) I/F unit(201) includes ports to be connected with communication terminals(PC#1-PC#N). An IP address management module(204) receives an IP address request signal from the communication terminals(PC#1-PC#N) and provides a certain IP address to the communication terminals(PC#1-PC#N). A protocol controller(203) detects connection to a port of the LAN I/F unit(201), transmits the IP address request signal through the port, and determines whether response data to the IP address request signal has been received from a system connected to the port to control an operation of the IP address management module(204). The protocol controller(203) sets an initial operation of the IP address management module(204) as disable, and if the protocol controller(203) does not receive the response data to the IP address request signal, it enables the operation of the IP address management module(204).
