An apparatus and a method for processing an image are provided to convert an input signal into a progressive signal favorably without deterioration of image quality by selecting a field interpolation signal and a motion-adaptive interpolation signal by each pixel. A signal generation part generates a progressive field interpolation signal by field interpolation from a scanning line which is located after a current field and located at the same position as an interpolated scanning line of the current field, or from a scanning line which is located before the current field and located at the same position as the interpolated scanning line of the current field. A doubled-image determination part determines whether a subject pixel included in the field interpolation signal is one of pixels that comprise a double-image part of the field interpolation signal.
