PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video recording and reproducing apparatus capable of simply combining a recorded video image with a title or the like and recording the result without the need for a complicated configuration. SOLUTION: An OSD pattern of a title or a graphic to be added to a video image recorded on a disk 1 is entered on the screen of a television monitor 8, and a signal processing section 3 converts the entered OSD pattern into a sub-picture pattern. The converted pattern is stored in a pattern memory 11b of a storage section 10. In recording the video image to the disk 1, the pattern read from the pattern memory 11b is combined with the recorded video image in prescribed timing, and a disk read/write section 2 records the composed video image and pattern on the disk 1.
