1,171,973. Brazing. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 19 Jan., 1967 [18 May, 1966], No. 2816/67. Heading B3R. [Also in Division C7] A brazed joint between two sections of titanium or titanium based alloy comprises a ductile fatigue-resistant alloy containing chromium, silver and titanium. The titanium surfaces to be brazed are cleaned by wet vapour blasting with silica flour, dried and then coated with chromium by vacuum deposition, a film of 0À00005 to 0À001 inch thickness being preferred. The coated sections are placed in a fixture with silver based brazing alloy located between them and the brazing alloy is melted in argon. The silver brazing alloy alloys with the titanium and chromium to form a ductile diffused bond adjacent each titanium section. The titanium sections may comprise 6% aluminium, 4% vanadium, balance titanium and the brazing alloy may comprise 50-95% silver, 0-5% aluminium, 0-40% copper, 0-5% zinc, 0-1 % nickel and 0-0À2% lithium, e.g. 95% silver, 5% aluminium. The chromium may be plated or sprayed on to the titanium surfaces, incorporated into the silver brazing alloy, incorporated in a laminated brazing material of chromium on each side of silver alloy or diffused into the titanium surfaces. |
