<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce size and cost and to improve circuit reliability by simplifying the structure of the AC conversion transformer in the DC/AC conversion circuit of a discharge lamp lighting device. <P>SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device 1 has a DC/AC conversion circuit 3 which converts DC to AC and steps up the AC voltage, and a starting circuit 4 which applies a start signal to the discharge lamp. The primary circuit and the secondary circuit of an AC conversion transformer 7 which constitutes the DC/AC conversion circuit 3 are insulated from each other. In the primary winding 7p of the transformer 7, the cross section of its part 7p1 with the output terminal of the starting circuit 4 connected thereto is very flat when cut along a plane squarely crossing the direction of winding, and the part 7p1 is made to be thinner than the other part 7p2.
