PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bookbinding apparatus which controls an amount of applying an adhesive (a back paste) by adjusting an amount of a gap between a roller and a bundle of paper sheets, and controls an amount of the back paste and an amount of a throat paste by adjusting a gap between a front cover and the back face of the bundle of the paper sheets. SOLUTION: The bookbinding apparatus is equipped with a pinching means 7 for pinching the bundle 6 of the, a container 43 for storing a hot-melted melt adhesive, a roller 44 for coating the back surface of the bundle 6 of the paper sheets with the melt adhesive in the container, a moving means 24 and 25 for moving the container 43 and the roller 44 along the longitudinal direction of the back surface of the bundle 6 of the paper sheets, a pressing means 5 having a table 54 on which the bundle of the paper sheets and the front cover are placed and pressing the front cover 12 on the bundle 6 of the paper sheets coated with the adhesive 8, and a table driving means 52 for positioning the table 54. The back surface of the bundle 6 of the paper sheets is positioned by the table driving means 52, and a setting of the amount of gap between the back surface of the bundle 6 of the paper sheets and the rollers is changed, and a setting of the position of the front paper sheet 12 to the back surface of the bundle 6 of the paper sheets is changed in accordance with the amount of setting of the amount of the gap between the back surface of the bundle 6 of the paper sheets and the roller 44.
